Hello Foodie Friends,

National Chocolate Day, observed annually on October 28th, is a day that brings a smile to the faces of chocolate enthusiasts around the world. It’s a day dedicated to honoring one of the world’s most beloved and versatile ingredients: chocolate. Whether you’re a professional pastry chef, a home baker, or simply someone with an insatiable sweet tooth, National Chocolate Day is the perfect occasion to indulge in the rich and luscious world of chocolate.

National Chocolate Day is a day steeped in history, celebrating a treat that has delighted the taste buds of people for centuries. While the exact origins of this holiday are somewhat mysterious, it’s widely recognized as a time to appreciate the remarkable journey of chocolate from the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations to the present day.

Chocolate’s history can be traced back to ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, particularly the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec cultures, dating as far back as 1900 BC.

These ancient civilizations were the first to cultivate and use cacao (the plant from which chocolate is derived). Cacao was highly valued and used in various rituals and as a form of currency.

The Mayans are believed to have created the first chocolate beverage by mixing ground cacao beans with water, spices, and chili peppers. The result was a bitter, frothy beverage that was considered a luxury.

The Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés is credited with introducing cacao to Europe. He brought cacao beans and the knowledge of cacao preparation back to Spain in the early 16th century. Initially, chocolate was consumed as a beverage and was often considered a luxury reserved for the elite, including European royalty.

The transformation of chocolate from a beverage to a solid form is often attributed to the Dutch inventor Coenraad van Houten in the early 19th century. He invented a hydraulic press that allowed for the separation of cacao solids from cacao butter, which paved the way for the creation of cocoa powder and the development of solid chocolate.

The 20th century witnessed the development of various chocolate products, including chocolate bars, truffles, and pralines. The use of milk in chocolate led to the creation of milk chocolate, making chocolate more accessible and enjoyable to a wider audience.

Today, chocolate is a versatile ingredient that can be used in countless culinary applications. From the classics like chocolate cakes and brownies to more adventurous creations like chocolate-infused savory dishes, the possibilities are endless.

To truly appreciate the flavors of chocolate, one must understand the art of pairing. Chocolate pairs exceptionally well with various beverages, including red wine, port, coffee, and even craft beer.

Chocolate Chip Pancakes or Waffles

Chocolate chip pancakes or waffles are a favorite breakfast treat. You can either add chocolate chips to your pancake or waffle batter or drizzle them with chocolate sauce for an extra indulgent twist. Here are some of the best perfect pairing options to enjoy alongside your chocolate pancakes or waffles: A cup of hot coffee is a classic and versatile choice. Its slightly bitter notes complement the sweetness of the chocolate while providing a caffeine boost to kickstart your day. A mimosa, made with equal parts of champagne and chilled citrus juice (usually orange juice), provides a refreshing and slightly tangy contrast to the sweetness of chocolate pancakes or waffles. If you prefer a bubbly pairing, a brut or extra brut champagne can provide a crisp and refreshing contrast to the richness of chocolate pancakes or waffles.

Chocolate Cake

Chocolate cake is a staple dessert at many celebrations and gatherings. Variations include chocolate layer cake, chocolate sheet cake, and molten chocolate cakes. Here are some of the best perfect pairing options to enjoy alongside your chocolate cake: A full-bodied red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, can be an excellent match for chocolate cake. The wine’s tannins and dark fruit flavors complement the richness of the cake. Dark, rich beers like stout or porter have roasted and chocolatey flavors that can complement the cake’s sweetness. Look for chocolate stouts or coffee porters for an enhanced pairing. Dark or spiced rum can add depth and a touch of warmth to the chocolate cake. You can also use rum to soak the cake in a dessert called “rum cake.”

Brownies

Fudgy, chewy brownies often come with chocolate chips or nuts mixed in. Here are some of the best perfect pairing options to enjoy alongside your brownies: Bourbon, with its caramel and vanilla undertones, can enhance the chocolate flavor of the brownies. The warmth and complexity of bourbon make it a great match. A red Zinfandel wine, with its berry and jammy notes, can create a delightful contrast with brownies. The wine’s fruity character complements the chocolate. Coffee, espresso, or a coffee-flavored liqueur like Kahlúa pairs exceptionally well with brownies. The coffee’s bitterness and aroma complement the sweet and chocolatey brownies.

Chocolate Croissants

Chocolate-filled croissants, often called “pain au chocolat,” are a beloved breakfast item in French cuisine. These flaky pastries are filled with chocolate and can be enjoyed warm from the oven. Here are some of the best perfect pairing options to enjoy alongside your chocolate croissants: Champagne or a sparkling wine, such as Prosecco or Cava, is a classic and elegant choice. The bubbles and acidity can provide a refreshing contrast to the sweetness of the chocolate croissant. Enhance your coffee with a splash of your favorite spirit. Whether it’s a bit of Irish whiskey, Kahlúa (coffee liqueur), or a flavored liqueur like hazelnut or vanilla, it can add depth to your morning coffee and complement the chocolate croissant. A chocolate stout, which is a dark beer brewed with cocoa, can create a harmonious pairing with a chocolate croissant. The beer’s chocolatey notes can enhance the flavor of the croissant.

Hello Foodie Friends, October is a month that all food enthusiasts eagerly await, as it’s the time to celebrate one of the world’s most beloved and versatile dishes – pizza!

National Pizza Month is a time when people from all walks of life come together to celebrate this iconic culinary creation. Whether you prefer classic margherita, loaded with toppings, or an exotic fusion of flavors, there’s a pizza for everyone to enjoy.

There are many reasons why pizza is so popular.

  1. It is a delicious and satisfying food. The combination of crispy crust, gooey cheese, and savory toppings is simply irresistible.
  2. Pizza is a versatile food. It can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even dessert.
  3. pizza is a relatively affordable food. It is possible to get a good quality pizza for a reasonable price.

Pizza is widely considered to be an Italian invention, but its origins can be traced back to ancient times. The word pizza comes from the Latin picea, which means “a flatbread baked in an oven”. The ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans all had their versions of flatbread topped with various ingredients, such as cheese, herbs, honey and dates. However, the modern pizza as we know it today was born in Naples, Italy, in the 18th century. Naples was a poor and crowded city, where many people lived in small apartments with no kitchens. They relied on street vendors who sold cheap and filling food, such as flatbread with tomatoes, cheese and anchovies. This was the first pizza, or pizza alla napoletana.

The pizza became so popular that it attracted the attention of royalty. In 1889, King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Italy visited Naples and wanted to try the local cuisine. They ordered three different kinds of pizza from a famous pizzeria called Pizzeria Brandi. One of them had tomato, mozzarella and basil, representing the colors of the Italian flag: red, white and green. The queen liked this pizza so much that she wrote a letter of praise to the pizzeria owner, Raffaele Esposito, who named the pizza after her: pizza Margherita. This pizza is still one of the most popular and classic pizzas in the world.

National Pizza Month was first established in the United States in October 1984. It was created by the founder of Pizza Today magazine, Gerry Durnell. The idea behind this celebration was to promote and appreciate the art of pizza-making, as well as to recognize its influence on American culture. Since then, this month has become an annual tradition, bringing foodies, and families together to enjoy this mouthwatering delicacy. One of the things that make pizza so beloved is its adaptability. Across the globe, different regions have developed their unique styles of pizza. Here are a few noteworthy variations and their perfect wine pairing:

Neapolitan Pizza

Originating in Naples, Italy, this pizza features a thin, soft, and chewy crust, topped with San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, and olive oil. Pairing wine with Neapolitan pizza can be a delightful experience, as the simplicity and fresh ingredients of Neapolitan pizza harmonize well with certain wine choices. The key is to select a wine that complements the pizza’s flavors without overwhelming them. Here are some wine options that pair beautifully with Neapolitan pizza: Chianti Classico: Is a classic Italian wine from the Tuscany region. Its medium body, bright acidity, and notes of cherry, plum, and a touch of earthiness make it a great choice to accompany the flavors of a traditional Margherita or Neapolitan pizza. The acidity in Chianti helps cut through the richness of the cheese and tomato sauce. Barbera: An Italian red wine, is known for its high acidity and versatility. It’s a fantastic match for Neapolitan pizza as it enhances the tomato sauce and complements the mozzarella. Barbera’s red fruit flavors, especially cherry and raspberry, are a perfect match for the simplicity of this pizza. Pinot Noir: Is a red wine known for its delicate and fruity character. It pairs wonderfully with Neapolitan pizza because it won’t overpower the flavors. Look for a Pinot with bright acidity and notes of red berries, and it should complement the pizza’s profile without dominating it.

New York-Style Pizza

Characterized by its large, foldable slices and thin, crisp crust, this pizza is often enjoyed with a variety of toppings. New York-style pizza, with its thin, foldable slices and a variety of toppings, offers a different flavor profile compared to Neapolitan pizza. When choosing a wine to pair with New York-style pizza, you’ll want a wine that can complement the bold flavors and the combination of cheese, sauce, and toppings. Here are some wine options that pair well with New York-style pizza: Cabernet Sauvignon: With its rich, full-bodied character and dark fruit flavors, is a great match for New York-style pizza. The robustness of this wine complements the savory toppings and cheese, making it an excellent choice for meat lovers’ pizzas or those with rich tomato sauces. Zinfandel: Is known for its ripe fruit flavors and often a hint of spice. This wine’s boldness pairs well with the heartier and spicier New York-style pizza varieties, such as pepperoni or sausage. Merlot: Merlot’s softer tannins and plummy, red fruit flavors make it a versatile option for pairing with pizza. It can work well with classic cheese pizzas or those with a mix of vegetables.

Chicago Deep-Dish Pizza

Known for its high, doughy crust, Chicago-style pizza features a thick layer of cheese and chunky tomato sauce. Chicago deep-dish pizza is known for its thick, buttery crust, rich tomato sauce, and layers of cheese and toppings. The wine pairing for this style of pizza should take into account its heaviness and the bold flavors. Here are some wine options that can complement Chicago deep-dish pizza: Chardonnay: A full-bodied, oaked Chardonnay can be a great choice. Its buttery and creamy texture can harmonize with the richness of the pizza, and the acidity can cut through the cheese and sauce. Riesling: For those who prefer a white wine, consider a semi-sweet or off-dry Riesling. Its touch of sweetness can balance the richness of the pizza, and the acidity can cut through the cheese and tomato sauce. Sangiovese: an Italian red wine, offers medium body and good acidity. It’s a versatile option that can work well with a variety of toppings on a Chicago deep-dish pizza.

Sicilian Pizza

Square or rectangular in shape, Sicilian pizza has a thick, airy crust and is typically topped with tomato sauce, cheese, and various toppings. Sicilian pizza, characterized by its thick, fluffy, and airy crust, often topped with simple ingredients like tomato sauce, cheese, and a variety of toppings, pairs well with wines that complement its flavors without overwhelming them. Here are some wine options that can be great pairings for Sicilian pizza: Pinot Grigio: If you prefer white wine, Pinot Grigio’s crisp acidity and citrus notes can pair well with Sicilian pizza. It complements the lighter toppings often found on this style of pizza. Barbera: an Italian red wine, offers a good balance of acidity and fruitiness. It can complement the acidity of the tomato sauce and work well with a variety of toppings. Rosé: A dry Rosé wine can provide a fresh and lively contrast to the flavors of Sicilian pizza, particularly if it has toppings like fresh vegetables or prosciutto.

Margherita Pizza

This classic Italian pizza consists of simple yet delightful ingredients – tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil, and a drizzle of olive oil. Margherita pizza, with its simplicity and classic combination of tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil, and olive oil, pairs well with wines that enhance the clean, fresh flavors without overpowering them. Here are some wine options that can be perfect pairings for Margherita pizza: Chianti: An Italian red wine, is a classic pairing for Margherita pizza. Its bright acidity, red fruit flavors, and a touch of earthiness complement the tomato sauce and basil beautifully. Pinot Noir: A red wine with delicate red fruit notes and good acidity, can harmonize with the simplicity of a Margherita pizza without overwhelming it. Sauvignon Blanc: If you prefer white wine, a Sauvignon Blanc with its crisp acidity, herbaceous notes, and citrus flavors can provide a refreshing contrast to the pizza’s tomato and basil.

National Rice Month is a time to celebrate the versatility, sustainability and deliciousness of this ancient grain. Rice is more than just a staple food for billions of people around the world. It is also a source of livelihood, culture and nutrition. Rice farmers work hard to produce high-quality crops that feed our families and support our communities. Rice is also good for the environment, as it helps conserve water, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide habitat for wildlife. Rice is truly a wonder food that deserves our appreciation and recognition. Happy National Rice Month!

Hello Foodie Friends, National Guacamole Day is just around the corner, and it’s time to get ready for a fiesta of flavors! On September 16th, coinciding with Mexico’s Independence Day, guacamole enthusiasts across the country come together to celebrate this beloved avocado-based dip.

Before we dive into the tasty recipes and tips, let’s explore the fascinating history of guacamole. Guacamole has deep roots in Mexican cuisine, dating back to the Aztec era. The word “guacamole” is derived from the Nahuatl word “ahuacamolli,” which means “avocado sauce.” The traditional recipe included mashed avocados, tomatoes, and a blend of spices. Over the centuries, guacamole has evolved into a versatile dip with countless regional variations.

There are many different ways to make guacamole, but the basic ingredients are avocados, lime juice, onions, tomatoes, and cilantro. Some people also add garlic, jalapeños, or other spices. The key to making great guacamole is to use ripe avocados. Ripe avocados will be soft to the touch and will have a slightly sweet smell.

Once you have your avocados, simply mash them together with the other ingredients until you reach your desired consistency. You can make your guacamole as smooth or chunky as you like.

Here is a basic recipe for guacamole:

Ingredients:

2 ripe avocados

1/4 cup lime juice

1/4 cup chopped onion.

1/4 cup chopped tomato.

1/4 cup chopped cilantro.

1 clove garlic, minced (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste.

For a spicy guacamole just add chopped jalapeños

Instructions: Mash the avocados together with a fork or in a food processor until smooth or chunky. Stir in the lime juice, onion, tomato, cilantro, garlic, salt, and pepper.

Here are some of the best ways to use guacamole:

  • As a dip with tortilla chips: This is the classic way to enjoy guacamole. Serve it with your favorite tortilla chips and enjoy the creamy, flavorful dip.

  • As a topping for tacos, burritos, and other Mexican dishes: Guacamole adds a delicious and healthy touch to your favorite Mexican dishes.

  • As a spread for sandwiches and wraps. Guacamole is a great way to add flavor and nutrition to your sandwiches and wraps.
  • As a salad dressing: Guacamole can be used as a creamy and flavorful salad dressing. Simply mix it with your favorite vinaigrette and enjoy.

  • Guacamole soup: Puree guacamole and vegetable broth to make a delicious and creamy soup.

  • As an ingredient in other dishes: Guacamole can be used as an ingredient in a variety of dishes, such as quesadillas, burgers, and soups.
  • As a snack: Guacamole can be enjoyed on its own as a healthy and satisfying snack.

  • Guacamole hummus: Mash together equal parts guacamole and hummus for a delicious and nutritious dip.

  • Guacamole toast: Spread guacamole on toast and top with your favorite toppings, such as eggs, bacon, or avocado.

Guacamole is a creamy, savory, and flavorful dip that pairs well with a variety of cocktails. The best cocktail to complement guacamole often depends on your personal preferences, but here are some excellent options that can enhance your guacamole experience:

Margarita: The classic choice! A well-made margarita, with its tartness and hint of sweetness, provides a perfect balance to the richness of guacamole. The citrusy notes of the margarita pair beautifully with the lime and cilantro in the guacamole.

Mojito: The refreshing and minty flavors of a mojito can contrast the creamy texture of guacamole. The mint and lime in the mojito add a zesty and bright element to your palate.

Michelada: If you’re looking for a beer-based option, a Michelada is an excellent choice. This Mexican cocktail, made with beer, lime juice, hot sauce, and spices, complements the flavors of guacamole and adds a spicy kick.

National Guacamole Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate this beloved dip and explore its endless variations. Whether you’re hosting a gathering with friends or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home, guacamole is the ultimate crowd-pleaser. So, on September 16th, grab some ripe avocados and get ready to indulge in the creamy, flavorful world of guacamole. Happy dipping!

Until we eat (and drink) again…

Hello Foodie Friends, September is a great opportunity to celebrate one of the most versatile and delicious proteins in the world.  Yes, the versatile and beloved poultry bird gets its own month of celebration, and there’s no better time to honor the delicious and nutritious chicken than now. From fried chicken to grilled chicken, from comforting chicken soups to elegant chicken dishes, this month is all about indulging in the flavors of poultry perfection.

So, let’s dive into the world of chicken and discover why September is truly a clucking good time!

National Chicken Month was officially designated in the United States to celebrate and promote the poultry industry. This annual observance, which began in the 1990s, is not just about enjoying delicious meals but also about recognizing the significance of the poultry industry. Chicken production plays a vital role in providing jobs and stimulating the economy. By choosing locally sourced chicken and supporting small-scale farmers and producers, you can contribute to the sustainability of the poultry industry.

One of the reasons chicken is celebrated during September is its unparalleled versatility in the kitchen. It’s the perfect canvas for culinary creativity, adapting to a wide range of flavors and cooking methods. Here are some delightful ways you can enjoy chicken this National Chicken Month and the perfect wine, beer and cocktail pairing for each preparation:

Fried Chicken

Fried chicken is an iconic Southern dish that has captured the hearts and taste buds of people across the nation and the world. Served with biscuits, coleslaw, and gravy, it’s a comfort food classic. Here are some perfect wine, beer and cocktail pairing options for fried chicken: Sparkling Wine: A dry sparkling wine, such as Champagne, Prosecco, or Cava, is an excellent choice. The effervescence and acidity of these wines cut through the richness of the fried chicken, providing a refreshing contrast. The bubbles cleanse your palate with each sip, making them a perfect pairing. Chardonnay: A buttery and oaked Chardonnay can complement the richness of fried chicken, especially if the dish includes creamy sauces or gravies. The wine’s flavors of apple, pear, and vanilla can harmonize with the crispy texture and savory notes of the chicken. Light Lager: A light lager, like American-style lagers or pilsners, is a classic and refreshing choice for fried chicken. Its clean, crisp taste and moderate carbonation complement the crispy texture of the chicken without overwhelming the palate. Pale Ale: A well-balanced pale ale, with its combination of malt sweetness and hoppy bitterness, can be a great partner for fried chicken. The hops help cut through the fried exterior, while the malt provides a pleasant backdrop for the savory flavors. Classic Margarita: The zesty and tangy flavors of a classic Margarita, made with tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime juice, can provide a refreshing contrast to the richness of fried chicken. The salted rim complements the savory aspects of the dish. Moscow Mule: The effervescence and ginger kick of a Moscow Mule, featuring vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice, can cleanse the palate and add a delightful contrast to the fried chicken’s flavors.

Grilled Chicken

Grilling chicken marinated in various herbs, spices, and sauces, is a healthier alternative that doesn’t sacrifice flavor. Here are some perfect wine, beer and cocktail pairing options for grilled chicken: Chardonnay: A classic oaked Chardonnay can be a wonderful choice for grilled chicken, especially if it’s marinated or seasoned with herbs and spices. The wine’s buttery texture and flavors of apple, pear, and vanilla complement the grilled chicken’s savory profile. Sauvignon Blanc: Is known for its vibrant acidity and citrusy notes, making it an excellent match for grilled chicken. The wine’s refreshing qualities and herbaceous undertones can enhance the flavors of the dish. Pale Ale: A well-balanced pale ale can be a fantastic choice for grilled chicken. Its malt backbone and hoppy bitterness can complement the smoky flavors from the grill and enhance the savory aspects of the chicken. IPA (India Pale Ale): If your grilled chicken has a bold marinade or a spicy kick, an IPA with its hoppy and citrusy notes can be an excellent pairing. The hops can cut through the flavors and provide a nice contrast. Mojito: A Mojito, featuring white rum, fresh mint leaves, lime juice, sugar, and soda water, is a refreshing choice that can balance the grilled chicken’s richness. The mint and lime add a cool, citrusy dimension. Sangria: Red or white Sangria, with its fruity and aromatic notes, can be a delightful choice to enjoy with grilled chicken. The fruitiness and sweetness can contrast with the smokiness of the dish.

Chicken Wings

Chicken wings are a game-day favorite and a staple at sports bars and gatherings. They come in a variety of flavors, from classic buffalo to honey barbecue, and are typically served with celery sticks and a side of ranch or blue cheese dressing. Here are some perfect wine, beer and cocktail pairing options for chicken wings: Pinot Noir: If you enjoy red wine, a light to medium-bodied Pinot Noir can work with milder chicken wing preparations. Its red fruit flavors and subtle tannins won’t overpower the dish. Sauvignon Blanc: With its bright acidity and herbaceous notes, can work well with tangy or herb-infused chicken wings. It can provide a refreshing contrast to the flavors. Lager: A clean and crisp lager, such as American-style lagers or pilsners, is a classic choice that pairs well with most styles of chicken wings. It’s refreshing qualities can balance the heat and complement the savory flavors. IPA (India Pale Ale): If you enjoy hoppy beers and spicy chicken wings, consider an IPA. The hops can stand up to the heat and add a flavorful contrast. Bloody Mary: If you’re enjoying spicy chicken wings, a Bloody Mary can be a bold and flavorful choice. The tomato juice, vodka, hot sauce, and various spices can stand up to the heat and enhance the overall experience. Paloma: Made with tequila, grapefruit soda, lime juice, and a pinch of salt, offers a bright and citrusy profile that complements various chicken wing flavors, particularly those with citrus or spice.

Chicken Tenders or Nuggets

Loved by kids and adults alike, chicken tenders and nuggets are bite-sized pieces of chicken that are breaded and deep-fried to perfection. They’re often served with an array of dipping sauces, making them a versatile and convenient choice. Here are some perfect wine, beer and cocktail pairing options for chicken tenders or nuggets: Chardonnay (Unoaked): An unoaked Chardonnay offers clean and crisp flavors that won’t overwhelm the delicate taste of chicken tenders. Look for one with apple, pear, and citrus notes. Champagne: For a truly indulgent pairing, you can’t go wrong with Champagne. The effervescence and elegance of Champagne can elevate the experience of enjoying chicken tenders or nuggets, making it a delightful treat. American Lager: A classic American lager is a reliable choice to pair with chicken tenders or nuggets. Its light and crisp profile complements the crispy texture of the chicken, while the mild maltiness provides a neutral backdrop to the flavors. Pilsner: A Czech or German pilsner offers a bit more hop bitterness and complexity compared to American lagers. The crispness and subtle bitterness can enhance the experience of eating chicken tenders, especially when served with a dipping sauce. Gin and Tonic: A classic Gin and Tonic, with its botanical notes and effervescence, can be a straightforward and refreshing choice for chicken tenders. The herbal and citrusy qualities can complement the dish without overwhelming it. Beer Cocktail (Michelada): If you prefer beer with your chicken tenders, consider a beer cocktail like a Michelada. This Mexican-inspired concoction combines beer, lime juice, hot sauce, and spices for a unique and flavorful pairing.

Roasted Chicken

Roast chicken is a timeless and elegant dish enjoyed by many. Whole chickens are seasoned with herbs, spices, and often stuffed with aromatics like garlic and lemon. Roast chicken is often served with a variety of side dishes such as roasted vegetables and mashed potatoes. Here are some perfect wine, beer and cocktail pairing options for roasted chicken: Pinot Noir: With its red fruit flavors like cherry and raspberry and its silky texture, is a versatile choice for roasted chicken. It provides a balanced pairing that won’t overpower the dish. Sauvignon Blanc: A crisp and herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc can offer a refreshing contrast to the roasted flavors of chicken. Its bright acidity and citrus notes can complement the dish, especially if it’s seasoned with herbs. Pilsner: A crisp and refreshing pilsner is a classic choice for roasted chicken. Its clean malt profile and subtle hop bitterness won’t overpower the dish and can cleanse the palate between bites. Amber Ale: An amber ale offers a balanced malt sweetness and a touch of caramelization that can harmonize with the roasted flavors of the chicken. It’s a great choice for a heartier preparation. Old Fashioned: With its simple combination of whiskey, sugar, and bitters, can be a great pairing for roasted chicken, especially if the dish is prepared with rich, savory sauces. The whiskey’s complexity matches the depth of the flavors. Spicy Margarita: If your roasted chicken has a spicy kick, a Spicy Margarita made with tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and a slice of jalapeño can be a bold and flavorful pairing.

Hello Foodie Friends,

It is a time to celebrate and enjoy one of the most versatile and beloved food items – the sandwich.

National Sandwich Month is the perfect time to savor the deliciousness that can be found between two slices of bread. This festivity encourages people to appreciate the simplicity and ingenuity of this culinary creation that can be customized to suit individual preferences. Whether you’re a fan of traditional deli sandwiches, hearty subs, vegetarian options, or gourmet creations there’s a sandwich for every taste and occasion.

Sandwiches are not only tasty, but also convenient and easy to make. You can whip up a sandwich in minutes with just a few ingredients, or get creative and experiment with different breads, fillings, sauces, and toppings.

But do you know how it got its name and who invented it?

The origin of the sandwich can be traced back to the 18th century, when John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was a prominent figure in British politics and society. He was also fond of gambling and card games, and often spent long hours at the gaming tables without taking a break for meals. According to one account, he once asked his servant to bring him some slices of cold meat between two pieces of bread, so that he could eat with one hand and continue playing with the other. This simple but ingenious invention soon became known as a sandwich, after his title.

However, some historians dispute this story and suggest that Montagu was not the first person to come up with the idea of putting food between bread because the concept of placing food between bread can be traced back to ancient civilizations. In ancient Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures, flatbreads were often used as a vessel to hold fillings such as meat, vegetables, and herbs. These early iterations can be considered some of the earliest forms of sandwiches.

The Industrial Revolution in the 19th century brought advancements in food production, transportation, and packaging. This made ingredients like preserved meats, canned goods, and factory-produced bread more readily available. Sandwiches became a convenient and portable meal option, especially for workers and travelers.

In the 20th century, sandwiches continued to evolve with the influence of different cultures and cuisines. The rise of fast-food chains, delis, and sandwich shops further popularized the concept. Iconic sandwiches like the hamburger, hot dog, submarine (sub) sandwich, and the Cuban sandwich gained prominence in various regions.

Sandwiches have been adapted and modified in countless ways around the world, incorporating local ingredients and flavors.

The sandwich’s history is a testament to its adaptability and universality. It has transitioned from a simple, functional meal to a culinary canvas that reflects cultural diversity and creativity.

To celebrate National Sandwich Month, I’ll share with you the 5 most popular Sandwiches and their perfect wine and beer pairings:

Grilled cheese Sandwich

A dry white wine with some acidity, such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, can help to cut through the richness of the cheese and bread. A dry sparkling wine, such as Prosecco or Cava, can also be a good choice for grilled cheese, as the bubbles help to cleanse the palate and keep the sandwich from feeling too heavy. Malty beers, such as amber ales or brown ales, can help to balance out the richness of the cheese.

Grilled chicken Sandwich

If the chicken is grilled with a light touch, go for a light-bodied wine like a Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. If the chicken is grilled with more char and flavor, go for a medium-bodied wine like a Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. If the sandwich has acidic toppings like tomatoes or pickles, you’ll want to choose a wine with some sweetness to balance it out. If the sandwich has spicy toppings like hot sauce or peppers, you’ll want to choose a wine with some fruitiness to cool it down. A pilsner is a light, crisp beer that is perfect for a hot day. The carbonation helps to cut through the richness of the chicken and the bread, and the light malt flavor complements the chicken’s natural flavor.

Turkey Club Sandwich

A light to medium-bodied wine will complement the flavors of the sandwich without overwhelming them. Rosé is a great choice for Turkey Club Sandwiches in the summer. It’s light and refreshing, and it has enough acidity to cut through the richness of the sandwich. Pinot Noir is a medium-bodied red wine that is often described as being “earthy” and “fruity.” It’s a good match for Turkey Club Sandwiches with a bit of char, such as those with grilled onions or peppers. A hoppy American Pale Ale with its citrusy and floral notes can complement the turkey and bacon, while the moderate bitterness can cut through the richness of the bacon and mayo. The maltiness of the beer can also enhance the overall sandwich experience.

Ham Sandwich

Pairing wine with a Ham Sandwich involves finding a wine that complements the flavors of the ham while providing a balanced and enjoyable pairing. A classic choice for many pairings, sparkling wine’s effervescence can cleanse the palate and cut through the richness of the ham and any accompanying condiments or cheeses. A nutty and malty brown ale can be a delightful match for a ham sandwich. The maltiness of the beer can harmonize with the flavors of the ham and any accompanying condiments. A crisp and clean pilsner can be an excellent choice for a ham sandwich. Its mild hop bitterness and refreshing quality can cut through the saltiness of the ham and provide a great balance.

BLT Sandwich

A crisp and zesty Sauvignon Blanc can work well with the fresh flavors of the lettuce and tomato. Its citrusy notes and acidity can balance the richness of the bacon. An unoaked Chardonnay with its clean, bright fruit flavors can be a good match for a BLT. Look for one with moderate acidity to enhance the sandwich’s flavors. A wheat beer’s light, slightly fruity, and sometimes spiced character can complement the freshness of the lettuce and tomato. The beer’s effervescence can cleanse the palate and enhance the overall experience. A crisp and clean pilsner can be an excellent choice for a BLT sandwich. Its mild hop bitterness and refreshing quality can cut through the saltiness of the bacon and provide a great balance to the sandwich’s flavors.

So, the next time you assemble your favorite ingredients between two slices of bread, remember that you’re crafting more than just a meal – you’re creating a masterpiece.

Happy National Sandwich Month!

Until we eat (and drink) again…

Hello Foodie Friends,

It is time to celebrate one of the most delicious treats ever invented: s’mores. Whether you enjoy them around a campfire, in the microwave, or as a decadent dessert, s’mores are always a good idea.

But do you know the history of s’mores? How did they get their name? And what are some creative ways to make them even more scrumptious? I’ll answer these questions and more, so you can impress your friends and family with your s’mores knowledge and skills.

The origin of s’mores is a bit of a mystery, but most sources agree that they were popularized by the Girl Scouts of America in the 1920s. The first recorded recipe for s’mores appeared in a 1927 publication called Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, where they were called “Some Mores”. The name was later shortened to “s’mores”, probably because they were so good that people always wanted some more.

Today, s’mores are enjoyed by people of all ages all over the world. They are a simple but delicious treat that is perfect for a summer day.

The traditional way to make s’mores is by roasting marshmallows over an open flame until they become gooey and slightly charred. Then, you sandwich the marshmallow between two pieces of graham crackers, along with a piece of chocolate and enjoy.

The heat from the marshmallow melts the chocolate, creating a warm, gooey, and satisfying dessert. But there are many ways to spice up your s’mores and make them even more delicious. Here are some ideas:

  • Use different kinds of chocolate, such as white, dark, or flavored.
  • Add peanut butter, Nutella, jam, or caramel for extra gooeyness.
  • Swap the graham crackers for cookies, brownies, waffles, or donuts.
  • Add fruits, nuts, sprinkles, or candy for extra crunch and flavor.

The possibilities are endless, so feel free to experiment and find your favorite combination.

To make this dessert even better, I’ll share with you some beverage perfect pairings for the S’mores:

Hot chocolate: The classic choice for a cozy campfire treat. The rich and creamy chocolate complements the gooey marshmallow and crunchy graham cracker.

Red Wine: A glass of red wine, such as a fruity Zinfandel or a rich Merlot, can be an unexpected but delightful pairing with s’mores. The wine’s sweetness and complex flavors can complement the dessert’s taste.

Coffee: A simple and satisfying drink that goes well with any dessert. The bitter and roasted notes of the coffee contrast the sugary and toasted elements of the s’mores.

Craft Beer: For those who enjoy beer, consider pairing s’mores with a robust porter or stout. The beer’s roasted and chocolatey flavors can enhance the taste of the dessert and create a unique sensory experience.

Milk: A classic and comforting drink that soothes your palate after a bite of s’mores. The cold and smooth milk softens the sticky and crunchy texture of the s’mores.

Bourbon or Whiskey: If you prefer spirits, a glass of bourbon or whiskey can be a great choice. The warm, smoky notes of these spirits can complement the toasty flavors of the s’mores.

Ultimately, the best drink pairing for s’mores depends on personal preference. Feel free to experiment and find the combination that you enjoy the most! Whether you make s’mores over a campfire, on a grill, or even in the microwave, National S’mores Day is an excellent opportunity to indulge in this classic, sweet treat.

I hope you have a wonderful National S’mores Day and enjoy some tasty s’mores with your loved ones. And remember there’s always room for s’more!

I send you Delicious Wishes, xo

Hello Foodie Friends,

August 5th is National Oyster Day, and it is the perfect day to celebrate one of the most delicious and nutritious seafoods in the world. They are a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals, and they are also low in calories and fat.

Oysters are fascinating creatures that have a long and rich history. They have been valued for their taste, pearls, and shells since ancient times.

The oldest known oyster fossils date back to the Triassic period, over 200 million years ago. Oysters have survived mass extinctions and adapted to different environments throughout their evolution.

Oysters have been consumed by humans for thousands of years. Oysters were especially popular among the Romans, who cultivated them in artificial ponds and transported them across the empire. Oysters were also enjoyed by the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese, and other civilizations.

In the Middle Ages, oysters became a common food for the poor, as they were cheap and abundant. Oysters were also used to make sauces, soups, pies, sausages, and other dishes. In the Renaissance, oysters regained their status as a delicacy for the rich and noble. Oysters were served raw on the half shell, with lemon juice or vinegar. Oysters were also considered an aphrodisiac, as they were associated with Venus, the goddess of love.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, oyster consumption increased dramatically in Europe and America. Oyster bars and restaurants became popular places to socialize and enjoy fresh oysters. Oyster farmers collected oyster spat (young oysters) from the wild and transplanted them to suitable areas for growth. In the 19th and 20th centuries, oyster culture continued to expand and diversify.

Today, oysters are still enjoyed by many people around the world, there are many ways to prepare and eat Oysters, depending on your preference and taste. Here are some of the most popular methods:

Raw: This is the simplest and most classic way to eat oysters. Just shuck them open, squeeze some lemon juice or vinegar over them, and slurp them down. You can also add some hot sauce, cocktail sauce, or horseradish for some extra kick.

Fried: If you like crispy and crunchy food, you can fry oysters in a batter of flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs. You can serve them with some tartar sauce, ketchup, or mayonnaise. Fried oysters are great as appetizers, snacks, or sandwiches.

Grilled: Grilling oysters is another easy and delicious way to cook them. You can grill them whole in their shells or shuck them and place them on a foil. You can season them with some salt, pepper, lemon juice, butter, or barbecue sauce.

Baked: Baking oysters is a great way to bring out their flavor and texture. You can top them with some cheese, butter, garlic, herbs, or breadcrumbs.  You can also make some famous dishes like Oysters Rockefeller or Oysters Bienville.

Oysters are also very versatile and can pair well with various drinks.

Here are some of the best beverages to accompany oysters:

Oysters & Wine: Pairing wine with oysters can be a delightful experience as the right wine can enhance the flavors of these briny delights. Here are some popular wine options that pair wonderfully with oysters:

Champagne and sparkling wines are a classic choice for oyster pairing. The crisp acidity and effervescence of these wines cleanse the palate and bring out the subtle flavors of the oysters. Sauvignon Blanc is another excellent choice for oysters, especially raw ones. The wine’s vibrant acidity and citrus flavors perfectly balance the salinity of the oysters. Muscadet, a white wine from the Loire Valley in France, is a classic oyster pairing. Its crisp acidity, light body, and subtle minerality work wonderfully with briny oysters. Muscadet wines are often described as having hints of sea breeze, making them an excellent match for seafood.

Oysters & Beer: Pairing beer with oysters can be a delightful experience, as the right beer can complement the brininess of the oysters and enhance their flavors. Here are some beer styles that work wonderfully with oysters:

Oysters and stouts are a classic and well-loved pairing. The rich, roasted flavors of a stout, with hints of coffee and dark chocolate, complement the briny and mineral flavors of the oysters. Gose is a German-style sour wheat beer that often includes a touch of salt. Its tartness and slight salinity make it a natural match for oysters. The beer’s refreshing qualities cleanse the palate between bites, making it an ideal partner for raw oysters. A crisp and refreshing pilsner can be an excellent companion for oysters. The light maltiness and herbal hop notes in a pilsner complement the delicate flavors of the oysters without overpowering them.

Oysters and Cocktails: The simplicity and elegance of a classic martini make it an excellent pairing for oysters. The cold, crisp gin or vodka complements the brininess of the oysters, while the herbal notes in the vermouth add depth to the pairing. For a bold and savory pairing, a Bloody Mary can be an excellent choice. The spicy tomato-based cocktail with vodka, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and various seasonings complements the oysters’ taste and adds a kick of flavor. A classic mimosa, made with equal parts sparkling wine and orange juice, offers a vibrant and fruity complement to oysters.

So, on this National Oyster Day, let’s raise a shell and toast to the wonders of the sea. Whether you prefer them raw on the half shell or expertly prepared in various culinary delights, take a moment to appreciate the simple joy of oysters and the memories they create.

Happy National Oyster Day! May your oyster adventures be filled with laughter, good company, and unforgettable flavors from the sea.

Until we eat (and drink) again…

I send you Delicious Wishes, xo
