Hello Foodie Friends,

National Chocolate Day, observed annually on October 28th, is a day that brings a smile to the faces of chocolate enthusiasts around the world. It’s a day dedicated to honoring one of the world’s most beloved and versatile ingredients: chocolate. Whether you’re a professional pastry chef, a home baker, or simply someone with an insatiable sweet tooth, National Chocolate Day is the perfect occasion to indulge in the rich and luscious world of chocolate.

National Chocolate Day is a day steeped in history, celebrating a treat that has delighted the taste buds of people for centuries. While the exact origins of this holiday are somewhat mysterious, it’s widely recognized as a time to appreciate the remarkable journey of chocolate from the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations to the present day.

Chocolate’s history can be traced back to ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, particularly the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec cultures, dating as far back as 1900 BC.

These ancient civilizations were the first to cultivate and use cacao (the plant from which chocolate is derived). Cacao was highly valued and used in various rituals and as a form of currency.

The Mayans are believed to have created the first chocolate beverage by mixing ground cacao beans with water, spices, and chili peppers. The result was a bitter, frothy beverage that was considered a luxury.

The Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés is credited with introducing cacao to Europe. He brought cacao beans and the knowledge of cacao preparation back to Spain in the early 16th century. Initially, chocolate was consumed as a beverage and was often considered a luxury reserved for the elite, including European royalty.

The transformation of chocolate from a beverage to a solid form is often attributed to the Dutch inventor Coenraad van Houten in the early 19th century. He invented a hydraulic press that allowed for the separation of cacao solids from cacao butter, which paved the way for the creation of cocoa powder and the development of solid chocolate.

The 20th century witnessed the development of various chocolate products, including chocolate bars, truffles, and pralines. The use of milk in chocolate led to the creation of milk chocolate, making chocolate more accessible and enjoyable to a wider audience.

Today, chocolate is a versatile ingredient that can be used in countless culinary applications. From the classics like chocolate cakes and brownies to more adventurous creations like chocolate-infused savory dishes, the possibilities are endless.

To truly appreciate the flavors of chocolate, one must understand the art of pairing. Chocolate pairs exceptionally well with various beverages, including red wine, port, coffee, and even craft beer.

Chocolate Chip Pancakes or Waffles

Chocolate chip pancakes or waffles are a favorite breakfast treat. You can either add chocolate chips to your pancake or waffle batter or drizzle them with chocolate sauce for an extra indulgent twist. Here are some of the best perfect pairing options to enjoy alongside your chocolate pancakes or waffles: A cup of hot coffee is a classic and versatile choice. Its slightly bitter notes complement the sweetness of the chocolate while providing a caffeine boost to kickstart your day. A mimosa, made with equal parts of champagne and chilled citrus juice (usually orange juice), provides a refreshing and slightly tangy contrast to the sweetness of chocolate pancakes or waffles. If you prefer a bubbly pairing, a brut or extra brut champagne can provide a crisp and refreshing contrast to the richness of chocolate pancakes or waffles.

Chocolate Cake

Chocolate cake is a staple dessert at many celebrations and gatherings. Variations include chocolate layer cake, chocolate sheet cake, and molten chocolate cakes. Here are some of the best perfect pairing options to enjoy alongside your chocolate cake: A full-bodied red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, can be an excellent match for chocolate cake. The wine’s tannins and dark fruit flavors complement the richness of the cake. Dark, rich beers like stout or porter have roasted and chocolatey flavors that can complement the cake’s sweetness. Look for chocolate stouts or coffee porters for an enhanced pairing. Dark or spiced rum can add depth and a touch of warmth to the chocolate cake. You can also use rum to soak the cake in a dessert called “rum cake.”

Brownies

Fudgy, chewy brownies often come with chocolate chips or nuts mixed in. Here are some of the best perfect pairing options to enjoy alongside your brownies: Bourbon, with its caramel and vanilla undertones, can enhance the chocolate flavor of the brownies. The warmth and complexity of bourbon make it a great match. A red Zinfandel wine, with its berry and jammy notes, can create a delightful contrast with brownies. The wine’s fruity character complements the chocolate. Coffee, espresso, or a coffee-flavored liqueur like Kahlúa pairs exceptionally well with brownies. The coffee’s bitterness and aroma complement the sweet and chocolatey brownies.

Chocolate Croissants

Chocolate-filled croissants, often called “pain au chocolat,” are a beloved breakfast item in French cuisine. These flaky pastries are filled with chocolate and can be enjoyed warm from the oven. Here are some of the best perfect pairing options to enjoy alongside your chocolate croissants: Champagne or a sparkling wine, such as Prosecco or Cava, is a classic and elegant choice. The bubbles and acidity can provide a refreshing contrast to the sweetness of the chocolate croissant. Enhance your coffee with a splash of your favorite spirit. Whether it’s a bit of Irish whiskey, Kahlúa (coffee liqueur), or a flavored liqueur like hazelnut or vanilla, it can add depth to your morning coffee and complement the chocolate croissant. A chocolate stout, which is a dark beer brewed with cocoa, can create a harmonious pairing with a chocolate croissant. The beer’s chocolatey notes can enhance the flavor of the croissant.

Hello Foodie Friends, National Guacamole Day is just around the corner, and it’s time to get ready for a fiesta of flavors! On September 16th, coinciding with Mexico’s Independence Day, guacamole enthusiasts across the country come together to celebrate this beloved avocado-based dip.

Before we dive into the tasty recipes and tips, let’s explore the fascinating history of guacamole. Guacamole has deep roots in Mexican cuisine, dating back to the Aztec era. The word “guacamole” is derived from the Nahuatl word “ahuacamolli,” which means “avocado sauce.” The traditional recipe included mashed avocados, tomatoes, and a blend of spices. Over the centuries, guacamole has evolved into a versatile dip with countless regional variations.

There are many different ways to make guacamole, but the basic ingredients are avocados, lime juice, onions, tomatoes, and cilantro. Some people also add garlic, jalapeños, or other spices. The key to making great guacamole is to use ripe avocados. Ripe avocados will be soft to the touch and will have a slightly sweet smell.

Once you have your avocados, simply mash them together with the other ingredients until you reach your desired consistency. You can make your guacamole as smooth or chunky as you like.

Here is a basic recipe for guacamole:

Ingredients:

2 ripe avocados

1/4 cup lime juice

1/4 cup chopped onion.

1/4 cup chopped tomato.

1/4 cup chopped cilantro.

1 clove garlic, minced (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste.

For a spicy guacamole just add chopped jalapeños

Instructions: Mash the avocados together with a fork or in a food processor until smooth or chunky. Stir in the lime juice, onion, tomato, cilantro, garlic, salt, and pepper.

Here are some of the best ways to use guacamole:

  • As a dip with tortilla chips: This is the classic way to enjoy guacamole. Serve it with your favorite tortilla chips and enjoy the creamy, flavorful dip.

  • As a topping for tacos, burritos, and other Mexican dishes: Guacamole adds a delicious and healthy touch to your favorite Mexican dishes.

  • As a spread for sandwiches and wraps. Guacamole is a great way to add flavor and nutrition to your sandwiches and wraps.
  • As a salad dressing: Guacamole can be used as a creamy and flavorful salad dressing. Simply mix it with your favorite vinaigrette and enjoy.

  • Guacamole soup: Puree guacamole and vegetable broth to make a delicious and creamy soup.

  • As an ingredient in other dishes: Guacamole can be used as an ingredient in a variety of dishes, such as quesadillas, burgers, and soups.
  • As a snack: Guacamole can be enjoyed on its own as a healthy and satisfying snack.

  • Guacamole hummus: Mash together equal parts guacamole and hummus for a delicious and nutritious dip.

  • Guacamole toast: Spread guacamole on toast and top with your favorite toppings, such as eggs, bacon, or avocado.

Guacamole is a creamy, savory, and flavorful dip that pairs well with a variety of cocktails. The best cocktail to complement guacamole often depends on your personal preferences, but here are some excellent options that can enhance your guacamole experience:

Margarita: The classic choice! A well-made margarita, with its tartness and hint of sweetness, provides a perfect balance to the richness of guacamole. The citrusy notes of the margarita pair beautifully with the lime and cilantro in the guacamole.

Mojito: The refreshing and minty flavors of a mojito can contrast the creamy texture of guacamole. The mint and lime in the mojito add a zesty and bright element to your palate.

Michelada: If you’re looking for a beer-based option, a Michelada is an excellent choice. This Mexican cocktail, made with beer, lime juice, hot sauce, and spices, complements the flavors of guacamole and adds a spicy kick.

National Guacamole Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate this beloved dip and explore its endless variations. Whether you’re hosting a gathering with friends or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home, guacamole is the ultimate crowd-pleaser. So, on September 16th, grab some ripe avocados and get ready to indulge in the creamy, flavorful world of guacamole. Happy dipping!

Until we eat (and drink) again…

Hello Foodie Friends, every year on September 7th, beer enthusiasts from around the world raise their glasses in celebration of National Beer Lover’s Day. This delightful holiday pays homage to one of the oldest and most beloved beverages known to humanity – beer. From the ancient Egyptians to the craft beer aficionados of today, beer has consistently held a special place in our hearts and culture. So, grab your favorite brew, settle in, and let’s explore the rich history and enduring appeal of beer on this special day.

National Beer Lovers Day is observed every year on September 7th in the United States. The origin of this holiday is unclear, but some sources suggest that it was created by a group of beer enthusiasts in 2008 as a way to promote and appreciate the craft beer industry.

The history of beer stretches back thousands of years. It’s believed that beer was first brewed over 5,000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq and Iran). Back then, beer was often considered a staple of daily life, consumed as a source of nutrition and hydration. It was even used as currency in some ancient societies.

The brewing process evolved over time, and beer spread throughout the world, taking on unique regional characteristics. As exploration and trade expanded, beer found its way to new corners of the globe, leading to the diverse beer culture we know today.

Today, the world of beer is more diverse than ever before. Craft breweries have exploded in popularity, offering an incredible array of beer styles and flavors. From hoppy IPAs to rich stouts and sour ales, there’s a beer to suit every palate.

National Beer Lover’s Day is the perfect occasion to explore new brews and revisit old favorites. Whether you’re a seasoned beer connoisseur or just dipping your toes into the world of beer, there’s always something new and exciting to discover.

Beer has a remarkable ability to bring people together. It’s not just about the liquid in the glass; it’s about the experiences and connections that happen over a pint. Whether it’s sharing stories with friends at a local pub, attending beer festivals, or enjoying a cold one at a backyard barbecue, beer often serves as a catalyst for social interaction and bonding.

Another exciting aspect of beer culture is the art of food pairing. Just as wine enthusiasts carefully select wines to complement their meals, beer lovers have embraced the idea of pairing different beer styles with various dishes. The range of flavors in beer, from citrusy and crisp to dark and roasty, makes it an excellent companion for everything from spicy tacos to decadent chocolate desserts.

To celebrate this special date, I share with you some perfect pairing for different beer styles and flavors:

India Pale Ale (IPA)

IPAs have been a dominant force in the American beer scene. Here are some perfect food pairings for IPAs: Spicy Foods: IPAs’ hoppy bitterness and citrus notes can help cut through the heat of spicy dishes. Try pairing them with spicy Indian, Thai, or Mexican cuisine. Think chicken tikka masala, spicy tacos, or a plate of buffalo wings. Burgers: IPAs are fantastic with burgers, especially those with strong flavors like blue cheese, bacon, or spicy sauces. The hoppy bitterness contrasts with the richness of the meat and cheese. Barbecue: The smoky, savory flavors of barbecue dishes, such as smoked ribs, pulled pork, or grilled sausages, pair well with the hoppy and slightly bitter profile of an IPA. Fish and Seafood: IPAs complement grilled or fried fish, as well as seafood dishes like shrimp scampi or fish tacos. The citrusy notes in the beer can enhance the flavors of the seafood. Pizza: IPAs and pizza are a classic pairing. The hoppy bitterness contrasts with the cheese and complements a variety of pizza toppings, from pepperoni to vegetarian options.

American Pale Ale (APA)

APAs are known for their balanced flavors, moderate hop bitterness, and often feature a blend of citrus and floral hop aromas. Here are some perfect food pairings for APAs: Grilled Chicken: The light hop bitterness and malt sweetness of APAs complement grilled chicken’s smoky and savory flavors. Marinate the chicken with herbs or citrus for added depth. Salmon: APAs work well with the mild and slightly sweet flavor of salmon, whether grilled, baked, or pan-seared. A citrusy APA can enhance the fish’s natural taste. Grilled Shrimp: The slightly bitter and citrusy notes of an APA can pair nicely with grilled shrimp, especially when served with a light garlic or herb butter sauce. Grilled Vegetables: For a vegetarian option, try pairing APAs with a platter of grilled vegetables, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with herbs and Parmesan cheese. Pasta Dishes: APAs can go well with pasta dishes that feature cream sauces, seafood, or pesto. The beer’s balanced profile works with a variety of pasta ingredients.

Stout

Stout varieties like American Stout, Imperial Stout, and Coffee Stout have gained popularity for their rich, dark, and roasty flavors. Some, like the dessert-inspired milk stouts, offer sweet and creamy notes. Here are some perfect food pairings for Stouts: Chocolate Desserts: Stout’s roasted malt flavors pair wonderfully with chocolate. Try it with chocolate cake, brownies, or chocolate truffles for a delightful dessert pairing. Steak: The robust flavors of a stout can stand up to the richness of a well-marbled steak, making it an ideal pairing for a hearty meal. Cheese: Stout goes beautifully with a variety of cheeses, especially those with bold flavors like blue cheese, cheddar, and gouda. Mushroom Dishes: Stout’s earthy and roasted flavors work well with dishes featuring mushrooms, such as mushroom risotto or a savory mushroom pie. Chili: Stout can be a great companion to a bowl of spicy chili. Its roasted malt flavors can help cool the heat while enhancing the overall experience.

Sour Ales

Sour beers, including Berliner Weisse, Gose, and American Wild Ales, have seen a surge in popularity. They are known for their tart and sometimes fruity or funky flavors. Here are some perfect food pairings for Sour Ales: Cheese and Charcuterie: Sour ales go wonderfully with a cheese and charcuterie board. Try pairing them with cheeses like goat cheese, brie, Camembert, or blue cheese. The acidity of the beer complements the creamy and savory flavors of the cheeses, while the tartness can cut through the richness of the meats. Salads: A crisp sour ale can be a refreshing accompaniment to salads, especially those with vinaigrette dressings. The tartness can balance the acidity in the dressing and add complexity to the greens. Fruit-Based Dishes: Sour ales often have fruity notes, making them a great match for dishes featuring fruit, such as a strawberry and spinach salad or a peach-glazed pork dish. Pickled Vegetables: The tartness of sour ales complements the acidity of pickled vegetables like pickles, sauerkraut, or kimchi. The pairing can create a harmonious balance of flavors. Duck: The complex flavors of duck can be enhanced by the tartness of a sour ale. Try it with duck confit, duck breast with fruit glaze, or a duck salad.

Pilsner

Pilsners, both American and Czech-style, offer a clean and crisp lager experience, appealing to those who prefer a lighter, more straightforward beer. Here are some perfect food pairings for Pilsners: Sushi and Sashimi: Pilsner’s clean and refreshing taste complements the delicate flavors of raw fish and the umami-rich soy sauce and wasabi often served with sushi and sashimi. Chicken and Poultry: Pilsner complements chicken dishes, whether they’re grilled, roasted, or fried. It can cut through the richness of fried chicken and enhance the flavors of grilled chicken. Mexican Cuisine: Pilsner is a classic choice for pairing with Mexican dishes like tacos, nachos, and quesadillas. Its crispness complements the flavors of the cuisine. Shellfish: Pilsner’s crispness can enhance the flavors of shellfish like clams, mussels, and oysters. Enjoy it with a platter of freshly shucked oysters on the half shell. Light Appetizers: Serve Pilsner with light appetizers such as bruschetta, caprese skewers, or cucumber sandwiches. Its clean taste won’t overwhelm delicate flavors.

National Beer Lover’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate a beverage that transcends time, culture, and geography. Hello Foodie Friends,

August 22nd is National Bao Bun Day: Celebration of a Delicious Tradition.

National Bao Bun Day was founded in 2017 by Wow Bao, a restaurant chain that specializes in bao. They chose August 22 because it was the day that their first restaurant opened in Chicago in 2003.

Bao buns are steamed bread-like dumplings that are filled with various savory or sweet ingredients. They are a popular snack or meal in many Asian cuisines, especially Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese.

Bao buns have a long history that dates back to the third century AD, when they were invented by a military strategist named Zhuge Liang. He used them to feed his soldiers during a campaign in southern China.

Bao buns are also known by different names, such as baozi, mantou, nikuman, hirata bun, and gua bao. They can be made with different types of dough, such as wheat flour, rice flour, or even purple yam. The fillings can vary from meat, vegetables, eggs, cheese, to fruits, nuts, chocolate, and ice cream.

Bao buns are not only tasty but also nutritious and easy to make, today I´ll share with you a home recipe to make Bao Buns:

Bao Bun Home Recipe

This recipe will yield about 12 buns. Feel free to customize the filling according to your preferences.

Ingredients for the dough:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (around 110°F or 45°C)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Ingredients for the filling: Char siu (barbecued pork), vegetables, tofu, or other desired fillings.

Instructions for making the Dough:

In a small bowl, combine the warm water and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.

Gradually pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring as you go.

Add the vegetable oil to the mixture and continue to knead until the dough comes together.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Assembling and Steaming:

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles.

Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each portion into a smooth ball.

Flatten each ball with your palm to create a circle about 4 inches in diameter. Leave the edges slightly thicker than the center.

Place a spoonful of your desired filling in the center of each circle.

Gather the edges of the circle and pinch them together to seal the bun, creating a pleated effect at the top.

Place each filled bun on a small square of parchment paper and arrange them on a steamer tray, leaving space between them to expand during steaming.

Cover the buns with a clean kitchen towel and let them rest for about 15-20 minutes to rise slightly.

Steam the buns over boiling water for about 15 minutes, or until they are puffy and cooked through.

Carefully remove the buns from the steamer and serve them warm.

Enjoy!

Hello Foodie Friends,

It is time to celebrate one of the most delicious treats ever invented: s’mores. Whether you enjoy them around a campfire, in the microwave, or as a decadent dessert, s’mores are always a good idea.

But do you know the history of s’mores? How did they get their name? And what are some creative ways to make them even more scrumptious? I’ll answer these questions and more, so you can impress your friends and family with your s’mores knowledge and skills.

The origin of s’mores is a bit of a mystery, but most sources agree that they were popularized by the Girl Scouts of America in the 1920s. The first recorded recipe for s’mores appeared in a 1927 publication called Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, where they were called “Some Mores”. The name was later shortened to “s’mores”, probably because they were so good that people always wanted some more.

Today, s’mores are enjoyed by people of all ages all over the world. They are a simple but delicious treat that is perfect for a summer day.

The traditional way to make s’mores is by roasting marshmallows over an open flame until they become gooey and slightly charred. Then, you sandwich the marshmallow between two pieces of graham crackers, along with a piece of chocolate and enjoy.

The heat from the marshmallow melts the chocolate, creating a warm, gooey, and satisfying dessert. But there are many ways to spice up your s’mores and make them even more delicious. Here are some ideas:

  • Use different kinds of chocolate, such as white, dark, or flavored.
  • Add peanut butter, Nutella, jam, or caramel for extra gooeyness.
  • Swap the graham crackers for cookies, brownies, waffles, or donuts.
  • Add fruits, nuts, sprinkles, or candy for extra crunch and flavor.

The possibilities are endless, so feel free to experiment and find your favorite combination.

To make this dessert even better, I’ll share with you some beverage perfect pairings for the S’mores:

Hot chocolate: The classic choice for a cozy campfire treat. The rich and creamy chocolate complements the gooey marshmallow and crunchy graham cracker.

Red Wine: A glass of red wine, such as a fruity Zinfandel or a rich Merlot, can be an unexpected but delightful pairing with s’mores. The wine’s sweetness and complex flavors can complement the dessert’s taste.

Coffee: A simple and satisfying drink that goes well with any dessert. The bitter and roasted notes of the coffee contrast the sugary and toasted elements of the s’mores.

Craft Beer: For those who enjoy beer, consider pairing s’mores with a robust porter or stout. The beer’s roasted and chocolatey flavors can enhance the taste of the dessert and create a unique sensory experience.

Milk: A classic and comforting drink that soothes your palate after a bite of s’mores. The cold and smooth milk softens the sticky and crunchy texture of the s’mores.

Bourbon or Whiskey: If you prefer spirits, a glass of bourbon or whiskey can be a great choice. The warm, smoky notes of these spirits can complement the toasty flavors of the s’mores.

Ultimately, the best drink pairing for s’mores depends on personal preference. Feel free to experiment and find the combination that you enjoy the most! Whether you make s’mores over a campfire, on a grill, or even in the microwave, National S’mores Day is an excellent opportunity to indulge in this classic, sweet treat.

I hope you have a wonderful National S’mores Day and enjoy some tasty s’mores with your loved ones. And remember there’s always room for s’more!

Hello Foodie Friends,

August 5th is National Oyster Day, and it is the perfect day to celebrate one of the most delicious and nutritious seafoods in the world. They are a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals, and they are also low in calories and fat.

Oysters are fascinating creatures that have a long and rich history. They have been valued for their taste, pearls, and shells since ancient times.

The oldest known oyster fossils date back to the Triassic period, over 200 million years ago. Oysters have survived mass extinctions and adapted to different environments throughout their evolution.

Oysters have been consumed by humans for thousands of years. Oysters were especially popular among the Romans, who cultivated them in artificial ponds and transported them across the empire. Oysters were also enjoyed by the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese, and other civilizations.

In the Middle Ages, oysters became a common food for the poor, as they were cheap and abundant. Oysters were also used to make sauces, soups, pies, sausages, and other dishes. In the Renaissance, oysters regained their status as a delicacy for the rich and noble. Oysters were served raw on the half shell, with lemon juice or vinegar. Oysters were also considered an aphrodisiac, as they were associated with Venus, the goddess of love.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, oyster consumption increased dramatically in Europe and America. Oyster bars and restaurants became popular places to socialize and enjoy fresh oysters. Oyster farmers collected oyster spat (young oysters) from the wild and transplanted them to suitable areas for growth. In the 19th and 20th centuries, oyster culture continued to expand and diversify.

Today, oysters are still enjoyed by many people around the world, there are many ways to prepare and eat Oysters, depending on your preference and taste. Here are some of the most popular methods:

Raw: This is the simplest and most classic way to eat oysters. Just shuck them open, squeeze some lemon juice or vinegar over them, and slurp them down. You can also add some hot sauce, cocktail sauce, or horseradish for some extra kick.

Fried: If you like crispy and crunchy food, you can fry oysters in a batter of flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs. You can serve them with some tartar sauce, ketchup, or mayonnaise. Fried oysters are great as appetizers, snacks, or sandwiches.

Grilled: Grilling oysters is another easy and delicious way to cook them. You can grill them whole in their shells or shuck them and place them on a foil. You can season them with some salt, pepper, lemon juice, butter, or barbecue sauce.

Baked: Baking oysters is a great way to bring out their flavor and texture. You can top them with some cheese, butter, garlic, herbs, or breadcrumbs.  You can also make some famous dishes like Oysters Rockefeller or Oysters Bienville.

Oysters are also very versatile and can pair well with various drinks.

Here are some of the best beverages to accompany oysters:

Oysters & Wine: Pairing wine with oysters can be a delightful experience as the right wine can enhance the flavors of these briny delights. Here are some popular wine options that pair wonderfully with oysters:

Champagne and sparkling wines are a classic choice for oyster pairing. The crisp acidity and effervescence of these wines cleanse the palate and bring out the subtle flavors of the oysters. Sauvignon Blanc is another excellent choice for oysters, especially raw ones. The wine’s vibrant acidity and citrus flavors perfectly balance the salinity of the oysters. Muscadet, a white wine from the Loire Valley in France, is a classic oyster pairing. Its crisp acidity, light body, and subtle minerality work wonderfully with briny oysters. Muscadet wines are often described as having hints of sea breeze, making them an excellent match for seafood.

Oysters & Beer: Pairing beer with oysters can be a delightful experience, as the right beer can complement the brininess of the oysters and enhance their flavors. Here are some beer styles that work wonderfully with oysters:

Oysters and stouts are a classic and well-loved pairing. The rich, roasted flavors of a stout, with hints of coffee and dark chocolate, complement the briny and mineral flavors of the oysters. Gose is a German-style sour wheat beer that often includes a touch of salt. Its tartness and slight salinity make it a natural match for oysters. The beer’s refreshing qualities cleanse the palate between bites, making it an ideal partner for raw oysters. A crisp and refreshing pilsner can be an excellent companion for oysters. The light maltiness and herbal hop notes in a pilsner complement the delicate flavors of the oysters without overpowering them.

Oysters and Cocktails: The simplicity and elegance of a classic martini make it an excellent pairing for oysters. The cold, crisp gin or vodka complements the brininess of the oysters, while the herbal notes in the vermouth add depth to the pairing. For a bold and savory pairing, a Bloody Mary can be an excellent choice. The spicy tomato-based cocktail with vodka, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and various seasonings complements the oysters’ taste and adds a kick of flavor. A classic mimosa, made with equal parts sparkling wine and orange juice, offers a vibrant and fruity complement to oysters.

So, on this National Oyster Day, let’s raise a shell and toast to the wonders of the sea. Whether you prefer them raw on the half shell or expertly prepared in various culinary delights, take a moment to appreciate the simple joy of oysters and the memories they create.

Happy National Oyster Day! May your oyster adventures be filled with laughter, good company, and unforgettable flavors from the sea.

Until we eat (and drink) again…

I send you Delicious Wishes, xo

Whether you enjoy it sliced, diced, blended, or even grilled, watermelon is the perfect summer treat. But do you know where it came from and how it evolved over time? If not, let me share some watermelon history with you:

The earliest evidence of watermelon cultivation dates back to about 5,000 years ago in Egypt, where watermelon seeds and paintings of watermelons were found in ancient tombs. Watermelon was valued for its high-water content and sweet taste and was often offered as a gift to the pharaohs.

Watermelon was introduced to other continents by various traders and explorers over time. For example, watermelon reached India and China by the 10th century CE, Europe by the 13th century CE, and the Americas by the 16th century CE.

They quickly became popular in the New World, and today watermelons are grown in all 50 states. The United States is the world’s leading producer of watermelons, followed by China, Turkey, and Iran.

Today, there are hundreds of varieties of watermelon, ranging from small to large, round to oblong, green to yellow, red to white, and seeded to seedless.

Hello Foodie Friends, Cheesecake is one of the most popular and beloved desserts in the world. It has a rich history, a variety of flavors, and a creamy texture that melts in your mouth. But did you know that there is a special day dedicated to celebrating this delicious treat? That’s right, July 30th is National Cheesecake Day!

The earliest known cheesecakes were made by the Greek physician Aegimus (5th century BCE), who wrote a book on the art of making cheesecakes who used a mixture of cheese, honey, and wheat flour.

Cheesecake was also popular in ancient Rome, where it was often served as a dessert at banquets. The Romans introduced cheesecake to other parts of Europe, and it eventually made its way to the Americas.

In the 1870s, a dairyman named William Lawrence from Chester, New York, created a new type of cheese called cream cheese. This cheese was softer and more spreadable than other cheeses, and it made for a better cheesecake. As a result, cheesecake became increasingly popular in the United States.

Today, cheesecake is enjoyed all over the world. There are endless variations of cheesecake, from classic New York cheesecake to more creative flavors like chocolate, fruit, and even savory cheesecakes. Cheesecake is a delicious and versatile dessert that can be enjoyed on any occasion.

In honor of National Cheesecake Day, here are five cheesecakes and their perfect wine, cocktail, and beer pairings:

New York cheesecake: This classic cheesecake is made with cream cheese, eggs, sugar, and vanilla extract. It’s baked in a springform pan and has a smooth, creamy texture. The perfect wine pairing for this cheesecake would be a Sauvignon Blanc because it has a citrusy flavor that can complement the cheesecake’s creaminess. Pilsner is a light and crisp beer that has a refreshing flavor that can help to balance out the richness of the cheesecake. A classic Old-Fashioned cocktail is made with whiskey, bitters, and sugar, and it has a rich and complex flavor that can pair well with the cheesecake.

Chocolate cheesecake: This rich and decadent cheesecake is made with chocolate cream cheese, eggs, sugar, and cocoa powder. It’s topped with chocolate ganache or whipped cream. The best wine pairing for chocolate cheesecake is a sweet and fruity red wine, such as a port, a zinfandel, or a merlot. The best beer pairing is a dark and malty beer, such as a stout, a porter, or a brown ale. These beers enhance the chocolate notes of the cheesecake, while providing some bitterness and carbonation to balance the sweetness. The best cocktail pairing for chocolate cheesecake is a creamy and indulgent cocktail, such as a white Russian, a mudslide, or a chocolate martini. These cocktails echo the smooth and velvety texture of the cheesecake, while adding some alcohol and complexity to the mix.

Strawberry cheesecake: This fruity and flavorful cheesecake is made with cream cheese, eggs, sugar, and fresh strawberries. It’s often topped with a strawberry glaze or whipped cream. A sweet sparkling wine, such as Moscato d’Asti or Asti Spumante, can complement the creamy texture and fruity flavor of the cheesecake and the bubbles also help cleanse the palate and balance the richness of the dessert. A fruity lambic beer, such as Framboise or Kriek, can enhance the strawberry flavor and add a refreshing tartness to contrast the sweetness of the cheesecake. A strawberry daiquiri, made with fresh strawberries, rum, lime juice and sugar, can create a harmonious flavor combination with the cheesecake. The rum adds a hint of spice and warmth, while the lime juice adds a touch of acidity and brightness.

Key lime cheesecake: This tart and refreshing cheesecake is made with key lime juice, cream cheese, eggs, and sugar. It’s often topped with whipped cream and lime zest. A perfect wine pairing for Key lime cheesecake is a sweet Riesling, which balances the tartness of the lime and the creaminess of the cheese. A refreshing beer option is a Belgian Witbier, which has citrus and spice notes that complement the dessert. A cocktail that goes well with Key lime cheesecake is a mojito, which has lime, mint and rum flavors that enhance the cake.

Peanut butter cheesecake: This decadent cheesecake is made with peanut butter, cream cheese, eggs, and sugar. It’s often topped with chocolate ganache or whipped cream. A perfect wine pairing for peanut butter cheesecake is a sweet and fruity Riesling, which can balance the richness and saltiness of the dessert. A great beer choice for peanut butter cheesecake is a chocolate stout, which can complement the creamy texture and nutty flavor of the cake. A delicious cocktail to enjoy with peanut butter cheesecake is a peanut butter cup martini, which can enhance the decadence and sweetness of the dish.

Cheesecake is more than just a dessert, it is a symbol of celebration, comfort, and happiness. It can brighten up any occasion. It can also help you cope with stress, sadness, or boredom. Cheesecake is a versatile and satisfying dessert that can suit any mood and taste.

So, how will you celebrate National Cheesecake Day? Will you try a new flavor, a new recipe, or a new place? Whatever you choose, make sure to enjoy every bite of this classic dessert. Happy National Cheesecake Day!

Until we eat (and drink) again…

Hello Foodie Friends,

National Tequila Day is almost here, and we’re celebrating in style! That is why I will share with you some Tequila history and the 5 best cocktails and their perfect finger food pairings to enjoy tequila on this special day.

Tequila is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant, which is native to Mexico.

The earliest evidence of tequila production dates back to around 250-300 A.D., when the Aztecs fermented the juice of the agave plant to produce a ceremonial wine called pulque. Pulque was sacred to the Aztecs, and it was often used in religious ceremonies and festivals.

In the 1600s, Spanish colonists introduced distillation to Mexico, and this led to the development of tequila as we know it today. The first commercial distillery in Mexico was built in the town of Tequila in 1608, and by the 1700s, tequila was being produced in several other towns in the state of Jalisco.

The first tequila distillery in the United States was opened in 1830, and by the end of the century, tequila was being exported to Europe and other parts of the world.

Tequila production experienced a major boom in the 1940s and 1950s, as it became increasingly popular in the United States. In 1974, the Mexican government declared tequila to be a protected product, which means that only tequila produced in the state of Jalisco can be labeled as such.

A proposal was made to the Mexican Senate proposing that a special day be set aside each year to celebrate Tequila. The proposal was approved, and National Tequila Day was officially designated as July 24th.

July 24th is also the birthday of Don Julio González, who is considered to be the father of modern tequila. González was born in 1899 in the town of Jesús María, Jalisco, Mexico. He began working in the tequila industry at a young age, and in 1942 he founded the tequila brand that bears his name. Don Julio González is credited with pioneering a number of innovations in tequila production, including the use of mature agave plants and the aging of tequila in oak barrels.

Today, tequila is one of the most popular spirits in the world. It is enjoyed in a variety of ways, including neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails.

Here you have the 5 best cocktails and their best finger food pairings to enjoy on National Tequila Day:

Margarita: A Margarita is the most popular tequila cocktail in the world. It is made with tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and simple syrup. The margarita is typically served on the rocks with a salt rim. Shrimp cocktail is a classic Mexican dish that is perfect for a margarita party. It is made with shrimp, cocktail sauce, and horseradish. The shrimp cocktail is typically served in a glass with a side of crackers or bread.

Tequila Sunrise: The Tequila Sunrise is a refreshing cocktail made with tequila, orange juice, grenadine, and club soda. The Tequila Sunrise is typically served in a tall glass with a cherry and an orange slice garnish. Quesadillas are a Mexican dish that is a great pairing for Tequila Sunrise. The cheese in the quesadillas adds richness and creaminess to the dish, and the tortilla provides a nice contrast in texture.

Paloma: The Paloma is a Mexican cocktail made with tequila, grapefruit juice, and lime juice. The Paloma is typically served in a highball glass with a grapefruit wedge and a lime wedge garnish. Tacos are a great option for finger food that pairs well with Palomas. The fillings in the tacos can be customized to your liking, so you can create a dish that perfectly complements the drink. Some good options for taco fillings include grilled fish, shrimp, chicken, or beef.

This tasty tequila drink is similar to a Paloma, but it is got more citrus juices like orange, lemon and lime juice. Layer it in a traditional clay cup, and the effect is stunning. If you don´t have a clay cup you can serve it in a highball glass too. Nachos are a popular Mexican snack that are made with tortilla chips, cheese, and your favorite toppings. They can be made with a variety of ingredients, such as ground beef, beans, vegetables, and sour cream. Hello Foodie Friends,

Did you know that July 17th is National Piña Colada Day?!? Well if you didn’t, now you do!!! It is a day dedicated to honoring the tropical flavors and refreshing goodness of the Piña Colada cocktail.

The Piña Colada is a delicious blend of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice. The year is 1954. Ramón “Monchito” Marrero is a bartender at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is a talented mixologist with a passion for creating new and innovative drinks. One day, he is experimenting with different ingredients when he comes up with a delicious blend of pineapple juice, coconut cream, and white rum. He calls the drink the Piña Colada, which means “strained pineapple” in Spanish.

The Piña Colada is an instant hit with guests at the Caribe Hilton. It is the perfect drink for the tropical climate, and it is a delicious combination of sweet, tart, and creamy flavors. Soon, the Piña Colada is being served in bars and restaurants all over Puerto Rico.

Today, the Piña Colada is a delicious and refreshing drink that perfectly captures the spirit of the Caribbean. It became a beloved drink all over the world,

This celebration offers the perfect excuse to gather with friends or family and enjoy this delicious cocktail, that is why I share with you a Piña Colada home recipe and a perfect pairing for each meal to enjoy with a Piña Colada.

Here is a home recipe for piña colada:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/4 cup coconut cream
  • 2 ounces white rum
  • Ice cubes

Instructions:

In a blender, combine the frozen pineapple chunks, pineapple juice, coconut cream, rum, and ice cubes. Blend until smooth and creamy. Pour into glasses and garnish with fresh pineapple, maraschino cherries, and paper umbrellas (optional).

Tips: For a richer flavor, use full-fat coconut cream. If you don’t have frozen pineapple, you can use fresh pineapple, but you will need to add more ice cubes to the blender. You can adjust the sweetness of the piña colada by adding more or less coconut cream. To make a virgin piña colada, simply omit the rum.  Enjoy!

For breakfast:

Waffles with fruit: Waffles are a classic breakfast food that can be topped with fresh fruit, such as pineapple, strawberries, mango, or banana. The sweetness of the fruit complements the sweetness of the piña colada. Pairing it with a piña colada is a great way to start your day. The tropical flavors of the cocktail will transport you to a beachside paradise, even if you’re stuck at home.

For lunch:

Grilled fish tacos: The sweetness of the piña colada pairs well with the savory flavor of the fish. The grilled fish also adds a touch of smoke to the dish, which helps to balance out the sweetness of the cocktail. Pairing it with a piña colada is a great way to enjoy a tropical treat in the middle of the day.

For dinner:

Grilled chicken or tofu: The grilled chicken or tofu provides a nice contrast to the sweetness of the piña colada. The grilled flavor also adds a touch of smoke to the dish, which helps to balance out the sweetness of the cocktail.  Pairing it with a piña colada is a great way to enjoy a tropical treat at the end of the day.

So, on National Piña Colada Day, raise your glass and toast to the refreshing and tropical flavors of this beloved cocktail. Let the Piña Colada transport you to a state of blissful relaxation and remind you of the joys of summer. Cheers to National Piña Colada Day!
